Harmonix is no different from Activision with latest Rock Band announcement
I'm going to lay some things out right here at the beginning of this story. I love music video games. I started with Guitar Hero 2, and have played and beaten all of the games since then. While some of the games are better then others, I feel like they are all really good, and for the most part, very fun.
So what is the point of this blog? I just wanted to point out that Harmonix is no different from Activision for releasing cheap tie-ins to get a quick buck.
When Harmonix left Guitar Hero and started making Rock Band, Guitar Hero and Activision became the worst things in the video game industry. Gamers praised Rock Band for being so different, having so many different features, and being just totally awesome. The mentallity with gamers was "Oh, Rock Band has drums and vocals now! Holy cow, so revolutionary." While I did think Rock Band was very good, I did not think it was extremely revolutionary. It was Guitar Hero with drums.
Then Activision announced Guitar Hero: Aerosmith. This is when it became clear: Activision did not want to continue the awesome series that was Guitar Hero, they are just trying to make a quick buck. Then Guitar Hero: World Tour is announced, and now they are definitely just trying to rip off Rock Band. Activision was hated, Treyarch was traitors. Rock Band 2 was a god amongst men. If you didn't play Rock Band 2, what the hell is wrong with you. Guitar Hero: WT is not fun. It is evil in the form of a video game. This is what people thought. To make matters worse, Guitar Hero: Metallica was released. OH MY GOD! I can't believe it. How can Activision even sleep at night knowing that they have killed a wonderful series that was Guitar Hero.
The truth is everybody, the two developers are not any different at all. They are all out to make a quick buck. How come no one was extremely mad when Harmonix announced The Beatles: Rock Band? Is it because you can't say bad things about The Beatles? While I love The Beatles, I don't see how it is different then Guitar Hero: Metallica. And now with LEGO Rock Band coming out, it is clear that Harmonix is just as bad as Activision for making games with cheap tie-ins. So please, stop hating on Guitar Hero, and respect that it is a good, fun game. Because that is what games are meant to be, not about getting pissed off and defending a company or game series.
