The 5 Biggest WTF Moments in Gaming
The nature of video games is funny, but there’s funny, then there’s genuinely batshit stupid; whether it’s an announcement or a YouTube video, there have been plenty of moments over this generation that have made us WTF, here are just a few.
1. Gears 2 Online
Cliffy B. must have been covering his ears and screaming during play testing to miss those insane Gears 2 glitches online. Sure, they’ve mainly been ironed out now, but it was very grounding to have a blockbuster video game release with faulty online multiplayer, which enabled players to roll into the air, gain unfair invincibility and generally abuse the system. Not only that, Cliffy and his cohorts promised they had listened and tried as hard as they could to ignore complaints upon launch of Gears 2, only exasperating an already far-from-peachy situation.
2. FFXIII on Xbox
No one could be faulted for feeling a little drowsy when watching Microsoft’s E3 showing last year, given it lacked any excitement whatsoever. At one point, the focus was downloading from Netflix, which doesn’t exist in the United Kingdom – or if that is too mundane, remember all the singing and dancing? This all only added to the shock and awe of the very last announcement by Microsoft, as Square-Enix [Squeenix] CEO Mr. Wada was brought on stage to, at first, talk about Role-Playing Games coming to the Xbox 360 that nobody cared about, but of course, that wasn’t it!
Yes, this last announcement was so surprising because of, after much pandering to the audience and ‘will he, won’t he’ shenanigans by Microsoft, Wada eventually came back on stage to announce the big one – Final Fantasy XIII – was coming to Xbox 360, detonating a metaphorical nuke on message boards across the web and leaving Jack Tretton of Sony of SCEA walking a little wonkily the next day at his presentation.

3. Avatars
There’s not really any decent image for this; it was pretty stupefying and still splits the Xbox Live community somewhat. Designed by software moguls Rare, these doll-like figures were to act like Miis, but for the Xbox. Why this was thought to be a good idea even for Nintendo is beyond this gamer, but that Microsoft would so blatantly rip it off and force it into the NXE update, then it bizarrely paying off in the party system and custom avatars, one must wonder if MS is winging it or if they truly are divine. Truth be told, they’re tacky, but they’ve gone a long way in defining the Xbox brand, which is a twist from their original, “wtf is this shit” reaction online.

Ravi Drums
Yeah, this isn’t Xbox-related and Baxy is an Xbox website, but come on! It was on the same day as Microsoft’s E3 showing with #2 on this list and it’s just so fucking hilarious. Picture a dark stage with as lights dim… So Nintendo is finally looking to redeem themselves with a Zelda game, maybe a Mario, after a year of nothing? Here it is! It’s… Wii Music.
Not only that, but also this fellow called ‘Ravi’ is having an epileptic fit on the plastic drum kit. Not pictured above is the subsequent horn blowing of Miyamoto – one of the most respected developer in the industry – looking either very focused on his Wii remote instrument playing, or depressed because of how bad Nintendo has become at making games. With how things are now, though, Nintendo’s pathetic E3 didn’t prove even a slight speed bump in their gallant sales effort worldwide, Wii Play is still in the top ten in some areas!

5. Crazy Lady on Xbox Commercial Take
I have saved the best until last (this isn’t in any particular order, mind you). Before Halo 3 or even Gears of War to entice players to ‘jump in’, all we had was this crazy old woman getting her crazy on. Who is she? Why is she? How is she? These questions linger to this day, although one thing is for sure, I wouldn’t want to run into her in a deathmatch! Note how the director gives up by the end of the take and just lets her run with it – there’s no stopping her at this point!

how about having moments that were actually in games, not memes and random news. FFXIII is relevant. But how about stuff like Nobi Nobi Boy or something. |

People who became 'gamers' when the 360 was released need to stop writing Top 'x number' lists about game related things. Games existed before Halo, fyi. |
